Long Exposure Photos

When shooting long exposure photos during daylight hours, it is necessary to block out light to avoid overexposure of the images. Although everyone knows that the cameras lens allows light in, many people are unaware that the viewfinder is capable of allowing in light as well.

Canon 80D DSLR Camera

Because of this, it is sometimes necessary to cover the viewfinder in order to prevent a picture from being ruined. Canon includes a valuable item with their DSLR cameras that enables this task to be done quite easily.

The Following picture displays a rubber piece that is included on the strap of every Canon DSLR camera. This piece is used to block off the viewfinder after removing the eye cup.

Rubber Piece On Canon Neck Strap

The eye cup can be removed simply by sliding it upwards off of its mount. Once removed place it somewhere it won't be easily forgotten. The rubber piece then slides over the eyecup mount on the viewfinder blocking out any light that would otherwise make its way in. Because it is not necessary to remove the viewfinder cover from the camera strap, it is in a convenient place and ready to be used whenever needed.

The Canon DSLR eyecup is displayed in the photo to the left.

The final picture shows the cover for the viewfinder in use after removing the eyecup. I hope this information will help those who are new to taking long exposure photos with a Canon DSLR.
