Catching Sturgeon On The Missouri River

Hoping to catch some catfish to add to the freezer I headed to the Missouri River with my son and daughter this afternoon. However, the catfish were nowhere to be found. Instead we stayed busy reeling in a number of sturgeon.

Of all the sturgeon we managed to hook into, the longest was about 30 inches in length. This is not a monster sturgeon by any means, but they still like to fight. Our smallest catch was a little over 18 inches long.

It was in the mid seventies with clouds in the sky. Although the sun paid us a visit for a few minutes it didn't seem like it lasted too long.

Emilee and Dakota did their best to skunk me, but I crept in on the fishing fun and ended up catching four. Emilee ended catching four as well while Cody's final count was three.

Living as close as we do, we tend to visit the river quite a bit throughout the year as long as it isn't flooded too bad. Each spring there is a time when the sturgeon are all we can catch. I'm not sure but it seems as though they chase the catfish off while they are spawning.

Our final count was eleven sturgeon between us, and we had a blast bringing them in. As usual we didn't manage to reel in a single catfish with sturgeon in the area.
* Please note that we released every sturgeon back into the river unharmed. *
